About RentMarketData

Our Mission: Clear ZIP-Level Rent Data

RentMarketData exists to make Census median rent and HUD Small Area Fair Market Rent (SAFMR) easy to compare by city and ZIP code. We publish side-by-side figures so renters, landlords, investors, and housing professionals can see what people actually pay next to Section 8 voucher ceilings.

Our goal is to help you:

  • Look up average rent by ZIP Code using Census median rent data from the U.S. Census ACS.
  • Compare those figures with HUD SAFMR Section 8 limits by bedroom size.
  • See the city and county listed with each ZIP Code when a ZIP crosses more than one place.

What Makes RentMarketData Different

Side-by-Side Census Rent and HUD SAFMR

We put Census Median Gross Rent next to SAFMR studio through 4-bedrooms for the same ZIP so you can judge market rent against Housing Choice Voucher payment standards.

Our focus: ZIP-level comparison, not a single metro-wide Fair Market Rent.

ZIP Code, City, and County Mapping

Many ZIP Codes span more than one city or county. We list each ZIP Code with the city and county where people most often live and pay rent. Those labels are for display only and may not match every postal, census, HUD, or PHA boundary used in an official program.

Official Source Alignment

Census figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates. SAFMR figures come from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and are published at the ZIP Code level by bedroom size.

See our Government Official Sources on the home page for the agencies we cite.

Built for Renters, Landlords, and Investors

Renters use the directory for relocation and voucher planning. Landlords and agents use it to price units against local payment standards. Investors use ZIP spreads to see where SAFMR sits above or below typical Census rent.

Preview Pages and Full CSV Datasets

Public pages show a preview of ZIP codes for each state and for Washington, DC. If you need the complete file, request the full dataset in CSV format through our Dataset Inquiry Page.

Who Is Behind RentMarketData?

RentMarketData is an independent housing-data project focused on organizing publicly available Census and HUD data into a consistent ZIP-level format.

We update displayed year labels and source vintages as new ACS and HUD SAFMR releases are published. For formal voucher decisions, always confirm current payment standards with your local Public Housing Authority (PHA).
