Census Rent and HUD SAFMR Figures

Census median rent is drawn from American Community Survey estimates. It is a statistical measure of what renters reported, often including utilities as defined by the survey, and it can lag the current asking market.

HUD Small Area Fair Market Rents (SAFMR) are ZIP-level rent benchmarks published by HUD for participating Housing Choice Voucher programs. They are not a promise that a PHA will approve a particular rent, and they are not a guarantee of what a landlord will charge.

• Local PHA payment standards can differ from the HUD SAFMR amounts shown on this Site.
• Utility allowances, inspection results, occupancy rules, and income calculations can change the subsidy a household actually receives.
• Preview pages show a subset of ZIP Codes. A missing ZIP is not a representation that no data exists.

ZIP Code, City, and County Mapping

ZIP Codes can cross city and county lines. We list each ZIP Code with the city and county where people most often live and pay rent. Those labels are for display only and may not match every postal, census, HUD, or PHA boundary used in an official program.
